Offering courses on restoration techniques for violin makers and restorers in cooperation with the University of Applied Science Markneukirchen.
COURSES IN MARKNEUKIRCHEN
We work in small groups of up to six in the university’s beautiful workshops, allowing participants to learn from their own projects and those of their peers. And because the school offers restoration as part of their training program, it is equipped with all the necessary machinery and materials.In preparation for the course, participants will typically send me a description, and pictures, of the project on which they’d like to work. This could be an instrument they would like to restore or a particular problem they want to discuss.
During the course we will then develop a restoration plan for the participants’ instruments, agreeing which steps can be completed during the course and how the project can be finalised in the participant’s home workshop.

- In this workshop you will learn about writing a condition report, evaluating a restoration plan & estimate, basic restoration techniques like making & correcting a plaster, crack repairs, patches and edges. Furthermore we will discuss more complicated restoration procedures, the application of ethics in the everyday life of a workshop and the use of modern techniques.

- In this workshop you will learn about basic chemistry of solvents used in restoration, how to use them to remove old coatings & retouching and make practical experiments. We will also talk about preparing & colouring wood, retouching and its different aspects like materials used and their practicability, stability and reversibility, colour, opaqueness, texture and thickness.
